Watch Interview with James Frederick on queerguru tv
As an emotional response to the light and color of his environs on Cape Cod, James paints “alla prima” in representational expressionism and abstract styles. Using broad confident strokes, he creates an energetic tension between paint and fabric. An innate mid-century aesthetic is apparent in both color palette and composition. He also creates unique pieces depicting Provincetown scenes on wood panels using acrylic, oil pastel and pencil. James has published multiple comic books and destination coloring books.
James grew up in Ohio where his father worked as an illustrator for the US Air Force. Painting and drawing from an early age in a family of artists, James focused on design, forging a successful commercial interior design career with a variety of major brands while at several agencies. He has lived in Pittsburgh, Boston, Chicago and Cincinnati prior to Provincetown.
Frederick Studio Provincetown was opened in 2015 as James’ primary working studio and exhibition space.
